Wan - Wan Way to Hell (2017)

Old school black metal triad WAN formed back in 2009 and Wan Way to Hell is their 3d album. Their sound reminisces the early days of Bathory (first three albums), Sodom and Blasphemy which means raw production, thrash metal influenced riffs and satanic image. As we are no longer in 1985 and therefore any shock element is missing, any band who is ambitious enough to revisit the glorious old school days should be able to present some elements that are capable of keeping the listener’s attention. Naturally, the immediate question that comes to mind, is whether WAN manage to achieve this...

Well, I would say partially yes…Wan Way to Hell contains 13 songs in total, far too many in my opinion for an album of such genre and unfortunately not all of them are in the same level of quality. The album has some stunning songs like Known as Dead, Till Kamp, As If, Spitfire Metal, Full Sving (best song of the album), Piss on your Grave, Inn i Ilden but also includes some more generic thrashers like King of Evil, The Challenger, Wan Way to Hell or weak songs like the 6 minute Svarthall which in its attempt to sound more dark and experimental, disrupts the flow of the album (possibly it would have worked better if it was placed in the end of the tracklist). My feeling is that had the album less songs the final result would have been much better as it would have been more consistent and would have achieved a better balanced output. Wan Way to Hell was released on February 10 on Carnal Records.
